Labor Day Campout

Actually we didn't go camping on Labor Day as the title suggests. That would have been a crazy thing to do around here I think. It would have been way too crowded everywhere. Instead, Joseph took a few days off work for the days following Labor Day. That is the perfect time to go camping because everyone just went over Labor Day weekend and that's when school starts as well so it's pretty quiet at the campgrounds. We had been meaning to go buy a new tent for a long time now. Joseph has a tent that he had as a boy scout that says its a two man tent, but it really only fits one. We wanted to go buy a bigger tent but just never got around to it. It came down to the day we were wanting to go camping and we still hadn't bought a tent so we decided we would stop at a walmart along the way to the campsite and pick one up. When we went to look at the tent selection we were a little dismayed to find the shelves practically bare! It confirmed my suspicions about camping on Labor Day weekend. It was obvious EVERYONE had gone camping and bought a tent along the way was we were now doing ourselves. There were no medium sized tents left! We didn't really have time to go somewhere else so we ended up buying this huge eight man tent for the three of us. I guess we'll grow into it someday!

I felt a little silly that we bought such a huge tent. Especially since only one person ended up occupying it during the night. Kilynn had a stuffy nose and woke up in the middle of the night both nights we were there. She couldn't go back to sleep unless we were sitting or standing and holding her. Therefore, one of us ended up taking her down to the car and spending the rest of the night there so that we could comfortably hold her in an upright position. We camped at "Lake Hebo" near Tillamook. We didn't know anything about Lake Hebo before we went, but we wanted a campsite near Tillamook so we could see what that neck of the woods was like. I've always heard it's a neat place to go and tour the cheesfactory and the bay. The cheesefactory was interesting and I'm glad we got to go. The bay though, wasn't quite as exciting. The fog was so thick when we got there that you couldn't see to the waters edge when you were standing on the sand.

Lake Hebo though peaceful was a slight disappointment as well. I wouldn't call it a lake. It's more like a murky pond. Oh well we had fun anyway. Joseph fished, and Kilynn spent most of her time throwing rocks in the water. We took the scenic route home and drove along the coastline down to Newport.

Sounds like a fun family outing - all except for Kilynn not sleeping at night. You will be glad that you bought the really big tent. It makes more sense to make a purchase once then to have to keep purchasing a new size every couple of years, right?
